The Alberta Electric System Operator is responsible for the safe, reliable, and economic planning and operation of the Alberta Interconnected Electric System. We provide open and non-discriminatory access to Alberta’s interconnected power grid and also facilitate Alberta’s competitive wholesale electricity market which, in 2019, had 194 pool participants and approximately $7 Billion in annual energy transactions.

Our Forecasting & Analytics team is looking for a Senior Economist to work in a cross-functional capacity to review and lead economic evaluations and apply critical economic thinking to AESO Files, and ultimately to ensure that AESO decisions are based on consistent and defendable economic analysis. These evaluations will include high-level market efficiency assessments and detailed cost benefit assessments of various projects and decisions with a primary focus on transmission projects and grid operations.

You’ll be influencing and advancing the use of economic efficiency principles in decision making across the AESO and work closely in collaboration with the Markets and Grid Reliability division – particularly Grid Analytics, System Planning, Operations and other teams as required. You will be working with a complex intersection of project, market, and regulatory data and information, economic principles, market dynamics, data and modelling techniques, and system costs and benefits to create economic evaluation assessments which consider stakeholder welfare impacts, impacts to market operation and price signals, and project net benefits. You also get to tell the story – you will communicate your results and recommendations to relevant internal and external stakeholders to support their ability to make informed decisions. Your economic evaluation assessments may also be used in regulatory applications and you may play a role in supporting the AESO in AUC proceedings with responding to information requests, developing supporting evidence and potentially being an AESO witness.

Key accountabilities:

  • Ongoing evaluation of technical and design files in order to aid and augment the AESO’s ability to analyze the efficiency of transmission projects, other operational decisions and related rules and policy.
  • Advocate for economic analysis across the organization and provide technical economic consultancy to other departments.
  • Scope, manage and deliver project analysis to internal clients on agreed upon timelines.
  • Develop economic advisory presentations and papers for corporate review and consideration.

You will also join an active community of economists to consult, connect and learn with, including our Chief Economist.

Signs you will enjoy working in this team:

  • You thrive in a dynamic environment and are looking for an opportunity to embark on transformative change.
  • You embrace change, pivot and adapt with ease
  • You enjoy learning and working with bright professionals fostering diverse and innovating thinking, technical excellence and knowledge sharing
  • You have high personal leadership and find it intuitive to place attention on priorities and value-add items
  • You are comfortable with taking an informal lead role and influencing across cross-functional teams

Signs you will enjoy this role:

  • You have a strong disposition to support consistent assessment and application of a fair, efficient and competitive marketplace
  • You work well in program and project-based work. You are energized by large, complex issues and files, and find it rewarding to incorporate new and different approaches in your delivery
  • You enjoy balancing multiple files and projects in flight
  • You enjoy mentoring other professionals on economic efficiency analysis and teaching others. This role also participates in AESO University faculty on economic courses.
  • Exercise flexible and effective communication skills, both written and verbal, including explanation of technical concepts to different types of professionals.

You bring some combination of:

  • A Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Economics
  • A demonstrated track record of independently conducting and communicating complex quantitative and qualitative analysis and recommendations
  • Extensive and practical experience within the electricity industry, energy or in applying economic assessments
  • Practical data and analytical skills including comfort using data handling software and coding platforms. Python capabilities is considered an asset.
  • Strong analytical acumen and an aptitude for conveying complex information into a simple, relevant and meaningful manner to different audiences and stakeholders
  • Exceptional writing and documentation capabilities and experience with publishing external documents is an asset
  • Experience in facilitating discussions with senior leadership and reaching a decision

Application deadline: November 29, 2020
